AI for you as a job seeker

By Beyondo, 8. Apr 2024

AI is not only changing how companies hire, but it is also changing how people search for jobs. As a job seeker, it can be hard to know what is helpful, what is risky and how much you should use AI in your own CV and applications.

Exploring AI in recruitment

Beyondo wants to explore the advantages, disadvantages, and potential pitfalls of AI in the recruitment process from a job seeker's perspective.

AI can make parts of recruitment faster and more structured. On the company side, it helps with tasks like CV screening, matching and scheduling, so roles can move forward more quickly. For you as a job seeker, that can mean faster responses, clearer processes and more relevant roles being suggested.

It’s useful to understand the difference between automation and AI. Automation handles repetitive tasks in a fixed way (for example, sending reminders or booking interviews). AI goes a step further by learning from data and making predictions, such as which profiles might fit a certain role.

Increasing access and fairness

AI can widen access to opportunities by matching your skills and preferences with roles you might not have found on your own. It can also support a fairer screening process if it puts more weight on skills and experience than on background details that should not matter.

At the same time, fairness depends on how the tools are built and used. This is why it helps to describe your skills clearly, use relevant keywords from the role and keep your profile information up to date, so you are more visible in these systems.

Challenges of AI

AI also brings risks. It doesn’t understand your story the way a person can, which can affect how your CV and application are read. If the system has learned from biased data, it may repeat patterns that are unfair. We also have a separate article on how to think about fairness in recruitment when companies use an ATS. Some job seekers feel they have less control when AI decides which roles they see or which applications are moved forward. Data use and transparency can also feel unclear. It can help to remember that AI should support human interaction, not replace it – and that you are allowed to ask questions about how your data is used and how decisions are made.

Our advice to job seekers

AI brings both advantages and challenges for job seekers, so it helps to understand how it is used in recruitment and where its limits are. If you choose to use AI in your job search, make sure you stay informed about how different tools work and which biases they might introduce.

Use AI to support your job search, not to run it for you. Let it help with ideas, structure and wording, but always personalise your CV and applications for each role and company. Highlight the skills and experiences that are truly relevant and make sure the final result still sounds like you and reflects your story. Add something about your personality as well, because AI-based filters tend to focus on data and can easily miss the personal aspects that matter for the job.  Embrace the motto of Beyondo:   Be you and do!
