Working with International Talents: An enriching experience

By Beyondo, 16. Oct 2024

Beyondo Participated in the Summit on International Talents

Beyondo participated in a summit organized by Linköping Science Park focused on the attraction, recruitment, and retention of international talents in Sweden. The event discussed how Swedish companies can benefit from hiring international candidates and the advantages this brings.

Several companies shared their best practices and experiences. Among other things, the importance of creating an inclusive work environment, having a solid onboarding process, and being open to the cultural and skill-based advantages that international talents bring were emphasized. The discussions provided valuable insights and inspiration on how companies can strengthen their global competitiveness by attracting and retaining talents from around the world.

We have compiled a summary for companies contemplating the recruitment of international talents for their teams. We have gathered all the responses from the panel and condensed them into the three key questions that shaped the panel discussion.

Working with International Talents: An enriching experience

What is the best thing about working with international talents?

Working with international talents means bringing in a diversity of nationalities, which enriches the company culture. It adds necessary skills that we might not have internally. The different experiences, ages, perspectives, and backgrounds create a dynamic environment where differences are appreciated and seen as strengths. Since we operate in a global market, it is crucial that our products fit in all countries, and therefore, international representation is essential to understand the various markets and customer needs. This permeates everything we do, from product development to service and all other functions within the company.

What should companies consider when hiring international talents?

For companies looking to open up to international talents, it is important to be open to the opportunities this brings and not focus on potential problems. Go for it! If hiring from outside the EU, it is important to be aware of the Migration Agency’s regulations, as these change regularly. It is incredibly fun and enriching to work with international talents! Find candidates who are interested in sharing the company’s energy and values.

How do you create an inclusive workplace?

To create an inclusive workplace, it can be beneficial to have English as the primary language. Since it is often a foreign language for everyone, no one needs to feel left out due to language barriers. Having English as the working language makes everything easier. Inclusion should start from the top; management must show that they have an inclusive mindset and practice what they preach. Good leadership and an open feedback culture are crucial. Ask “What can we do better?” and learn from the international talents, who can contribute new perspectives.

"Team activities are also important. Do things together, invite and be invited."

FIKA Quotes 3

Let the teams decide what is best for them regarding hybrid work or on-site work. Be open. A solid onboarding process is also important. Some companies have the same onboarding for everyone, while others tailor the onboarding process to individual needs.

Inclusion

One company mentioned that the goal is not necessarily to attract international candidates, but rather to find the right skills for the job, which often means hiring internationally. To achieve this, it is essential to create an inclusive workplace.

"You need people, regardless of their origin, who can adapt and enjoy working in an environment where different situations arise and the pace is often fast."

Adaptability is crucial, and international candidates often possess this quality.

Communication

Promote transparent communication and create a culture where everyone feels comfortable asking for help. Foster an environment where it is okay to make mistakes and where there is a continuous drive for self-improvement. Such a culture contributes to a safe and developmental workplace.

Work on employee engagement and focus on both physical and mental health. Help each other. Have an “orientation day” twice a year where all new employees participate in extra activities for inclusion.
